Venture for Polish Bay Area seniors
Mr. Lewandowski,
My name is Barbara (-- or Lala, as my parents called me--) and I am
writing to ask for you assistance. Seven months ago my husband
and I moved my mother here to Oakland from Philadelphia. She is 80
and Polish-- a Veteran of WWII and survivor of a Russian labor camp.
While she suffers from some memory loss and has great trouble walking,
she is very vital in other ways. The change, as you can imagine, has
been quite difficult on her. My husband and I have taken her to local
Polish churches and attempted to engage her other ways, but it is
a challenge given her condition. But I have an idea and am sincerely
asking anyone out there reading this in the Polish Community for help!
The idea: to form a small seniors social group for frail and elderly
Poles living here in the Bay Area. There must be others out there,
like me, who are taking care of elderly parent or grandparent.
Dementia, physical weakness, and other illnesses are a fact of life.
Those who suffer often do not have opportunities for socializing
among their own age or cultural group--and they often don't feel
comfortable in mixed groups. Those who provide the caretaking often
find it hard to take a break. My thought was that we could form
a group of a few families and have a one day a month meeting in
someone's home -- just for tea, cake and conversation--for not more
than 3 hours. The location could be rotated, and caretakers could
be rotated as well. That way, some folks could leave their
parent/grandparents at the "tea party" and get away for a few
hours to do something that would rejuvenate them as well.
What do you think? Should I attempt to put this request in
your Newsletter-- or could it be sent out on a ListServ?
I would appreciate any feedback and/assistance you could give
in helping me organize this "seniors" venture.

Warsaw Village Band to visit San Francisco Bay Area
The world famous Polish band will visit San Francisco this coming
August 2005. The band is so popular and famous that on their web
site people from their home country, Poland, are asking when they
can enjoy their life performances. We are very lucky to have them
in San Francisco. They won the prestigious BBC World Music Award
in the last round in 2004. Please join the world and see this ecstatic

Warsaw Village Band was founded in 1997 by six young
musicians. Playing violin, suka (unique polish fiddle
coming from XVIth century), cello and various traditional
polish drums.
Their repertoire consists of folk dance melodies , ballads
and rural songs, which are performed in a special way -
using a special, old technique of singing, that consists in
using so called white voices. However it's not only a simple
imitation of Polish folk music, but rather adduction to the
concept of folk music, giving the style of folk performance
which is closer to modern aesthetic conventions.

Solidarity activists of 1980's please share your experiences
If you were forced to leave Poland because of Martial Law, you are
the person I am looking for!
I am working on a book about Poles who were arrested and brought to
the internment camps or/and imprisoned due to the Martial Law in 1981
and then were given offer to leave Poland, so they currently live
in the foreign countries.

Joseph Jedd, Polish Veteran of WW II
Joseph Jedd
Born: August 21, 1919 in Tarnow, Poland
At Rest: July 31, 2005 in Los Altos, California
In 1939, when the war broke out, he volunteered into the Polish Army.
After Poland's defeat he escaped to France when Joseph served in the
French Army's Second Polish Division.
After the defeat of France, he went to Switzerland where he joined
the French Underground (F.F.I.) in the Spring of 1944.
When the Annecy Region of France became liberated Joseph went to Italy
where he volunteered with the Polish Second Corps of the Eight British
Army. From Italy he was sent to the Middle East where he obtained
training in tanks and in the Intelligence Service.
After the war, Joseph Jedd came to the United States in 1948 with his
wife and raised a family in Los Altos, CA. He joined Stanford
University where he became the Bursar and since 1984 is the Bursar
Emeritus of Stanford University after 25 years of meritorial service.
Joseph Jedd had 14 medals from four different countries. He was the
President of Stanford Faculty Club, President of the Palo Alto Rotary
Club, and also served as the President of the Polish American Congress
for two consecutive terms.
In Loving Memory of Joseph Jedd:
His family and colleagues will fondly remember Joe for his intellect,
being proud of his Polish heritage, and quick wit. Joe had a passion
for helping those less fortunate. He assisted many new Polish
immigrants build a better life in the United States.
Joe was a "Gift" to us through his humor and warmth. He will be truly
missed by all.
Survived by his wife, Maria Alina of Los Altos; his daughter,
Maya Veronica of Los Gatos; his son, Gregory of Singapore,
and Sister Sofia Jedrzykiewicz of Krakow, Poland.
A memorial service will be held at the Stanford University Faculty
Club Gold Lounge on Saturday, August 6th at noon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made
to Amnesty International.
